Oh, Christmas Tree...how do I decorate thee?

The Christmas Tree is one of the most recognisable symbols of Christmas. This tradition dates back 100's of years and is celebrated by people all over the world. Every family has a unique way of decorating their tree, and the Warren household is no different.  Our tree is usually put up on 25 November each year. I know this is early, but it takes so long, I want to enjoy its beauty for as long as possible.

I am not an organised person. At all. But when it comes to my..sorry...our Christmas tree, I like to assemble it step by step. Last year was the first year I've actually allowed the kids to help. I love Christmas, and the Christmas tree, and I really like everything to be placed on the tree in a particular order and place.  It has taken a lot for me to let go and share. Sounds like a joyful family experience in our house, doesn't it. lol. Here's how the tree is decorated in the Warren house...documented for the future, so the kids can remind their kids how nuts their nanna was.

Step 1. Sort out the branches. Our tree is coloured coded, so the kids start by pulling each branch out and piling it in the appropriate colour pile, ready to be assembled.

Step 2. Assemble the frame of the tree, and have someone tall and strong (ie. Daddy) to put the top on and to tighten the screws in the base.

Step 3. Start adding the branches, row by row, working your way up from the bottom. Each row has a different colour, so the kids know exactly which branch goes where. Once all the branches are in place, fluff them up a bit, so the tree looks nice and full.

Step 4. Add the lights, and test to see if they're working and distributed evenly across the tree. Before adding any more decorations, the tree skirt gets tied on.  Next up, wrap the pearls around and around the tree until you feel a bit dizzy. Grab another coloured strand of pearls and repeat, going the opposite way to counteract the dizziness. lol.

Step 5. Now its time for the decorations. You can probably see the pearl strands running vertically down the tree. This is where I get particularly finicky. I like to have an even distribution of baubles on the tree. The pearls quarter the tree so that only 3 of each colour appear in each quadrant. nb. I did say I was anal...stop smirking. Once the baubles are on, all the special ornaments are spread across the tree. Seth and Eme have been making ornaments for the last few years and they take pride of place on the tree. I have been collecting ornaments from all over the world and many are very fragile. We only had one casualty this year...a glass bauble from Harrods, London that had a hand-painted silk feature. Seth was very upset that he dropped it. Don't fret. All is okay...there are another two.

Step 6. Last but not least, the Angel goes on top. The kids take turns each year, and the odd years belong to Seth. Thankfully Daddy was there to lift him up! Traditionally, an angel or star is placed on top of the tree. An angel represents the host of angels from the Nativity; and a star represents the Star of Bethlehem from the Nativity...there you go. One Christmas factoid for the day.

Here's our tree in all it's glory. The lights twinkle whenever we're at home...day or night.  So far there's only one sad little present under the tree (for Eme's Year 6 buddy), but more will appear as they're bought and wrapped.  Each year I hang the word "Joy" near the tree. The vinyl forest was added to the wall in the living room a few months ago, so now the "Joy" looks like one of the branches. lol. The forest is available from EAD Designs.

So that's how its done in the Warren household. How do you decorate your family Christmas tree?  Come and share your tree here, and add this button to your blog post.  It doesn't matter how its decorated; whether its a fresh fir or fabulously faux; traditional green or metallic magenta; big or small; each and every one is beautiful in its own way and a part of your family's Christmas traditions.

Looking forward to seeing all of your glorious trees, and sharing in the Christmas spirit.

Review and Giveaway | Busby Pure Tissue Oil

I looked down at my hands recently and noticed that they're not looking as youthful as they once were. When did I start having old lady hands?? I often get told I look younger than my years, but if they took a peek at my hands, people would know the harsh truth.

I was recently sent a bottle of Busby Pure Tissue Oil to try out. It promised to improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks, wrinkles, and ageing or dehydrated skin. Worth a shot...what did I have to lose (except wrinkles).

Over a period of weeks, I dutifully applied the oil to my hands and arms every morning and did notice a difference. My skin appeared much healthier and hydrated, and some of those hand wrinkles had, in fact, disappeared. Exactly the outcome I was hoping for.

The oil felt very light on my skin, and a little bit goes a long way, so its a very economical product to purchase.  The fragrance is just lovely as well...the combination of avocado, grape seed and rose hip really works!  I have sensitive skin, and didn't have any adverse reactions at all, so that's a huge plus!  The only drawback I could see was that I had to wipe down the palms of my hands after...not a big deal at all, and something I can easily deal with.

Busby Pure Tissue Oil is clinically proven to achieve its intended results. It doesn't contain harmful ingredients and is suitable for sensitive skin and use during pregnancy, absorbing easily into the skin. Its rich in natural oils - avocado, grape seed and rose hip, as well as being a natural source of Vitamin A and C, plus Omega 3, 6 and 9 (the good oils). It also contains 5 times more Vitamin E than some leading brands.

Would I use this product regularly? Yes I would. In fact I've recommended it to my Dad to use on his forehead. Here's hoping it helps reduce the appearance of the scar he's received thanks to the removal of a skin cancer.

Would you like to try it for yourself?  I have three 100ml bottles to give away to three Life as we know it readers. Here's the entry details...

A Christmas Meme...

I saw this Christmas meme on Tina Gray {dot} me and just had to play along!  Here we go...

  1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Although egg nog is pretty tasty (and boozy), I do prefer a good hot chocolate...or should that be an iced chocolate for those of us celebrating Christmas during summer?...
  2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Santa wraps all of the presents for the kids and puts them inside their individual Santa sacks beside the tree. Santa always makes sure he picks a different wrapping paper to mummy and daddy. lol.
  3. Coloured lights on tree/house or white? I like a bit of both...love all the colours equally twinkling  away. Our tree currently has around 900 lights!
  4. [nb. not my house. lol]

  5. Do you hang mistletoe? No...I haven't found one that looks nice enough...since I can't get it fresh, I'm not going to settle for a poor looking plastic substitute. If anyone knows where I can get a good looking one in Australia; please hook me up.
  6. When do you put your decorations up? On 25 November each year...except this year because we were at Nathan and Racheal's wedding (yay!)
  7. What is your favourite holiday dish? There's a few things I like to eat every Christmas...chocolate coated almonds, roast pork and crackling, baked potatoes and gravy. I don't really have a favourite "holiday dish" as such.
  8. Favourite Holiday memory as a child? Its not one particular memory...but every Christmas morning when I was a child. My sister and I would wake up mum and dad about 5.30am. The louver doors to the lounge room would be closed and we were never allowed to peek. Dad would let us through, then hand out the presents. Once they were all dished out, we could begin to open them. There'd be wrapping paper flying everywhere! Mum would watch us with a smile on her face. I get that look on my face now when I watch my own children open their presents.
  9. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? In kindergarten aged 5...a class mate told me, but I kept it secret from my little sister so that it wouldn't be ruined for her. I also didn't let on to mum and dad so that "Santa" would still keep delivering! I still believe in the spirit of Santa...its so magical.
  10. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? Never. Its always bright and early Christmas morning. I do however give the kids a new set of pj's to wear...mostly so they'll be coordinated for the crazy Christmas photos in the morning.
  11. How do you decorate your Christmas tree? I'm incredibly anal and methodical about it...there's a blog post coming...watch this space.
  12. Snow! Love it or Dread it? I wish it snowed for Christmas here...just once.
  13. Can you ice skate? I've only tried once, and ended up with many bruises.
  14. Do you remember your favourite gift? Every year, "Santa" would bring my sister and I, a new school bag and stationery supplies, which I loved. Nothing like a fresh set of coloured pencils to get the creativity flowing. I guess that was one way of reducing the back to school costs.
  15. What’s the most important thing about the Holidays for you? Being with my family.
  16. What is your favourite Holiday Dessert? Bakers Delight mince pies with cold custard...on the side.
  17. What is your favourite holiday tradition? Decorating the Christmas tree, walking around the neighbourhood to check out all the Christmas lights, and attending the kids' school Christmas concert.
  18. What tops your tree? An angel. She has a cream skirt with gold jacket and a spray of gold coming out from behind her. This will be her 11th Christmas on top of our tree.
  19. Which do you prefer giving or receiving? I much prefer giving. I like to see the joy on people's faces when the open their gifts.
  20. What is your favourite Christmas Song? That's a hard one...I love Christmas carols! It would have to be "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey
  21. Candy Canes: Yuck or Yum? Yum...if you get a good one...not those cheap, chalky tasting, crappy ones
  22. Favourite Christmas Show? Its a tie between "Elf" and "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation".
  23. Saddest Christmas Song? My Grown Up Christmas List...
Will you play along? I'd love to read your answers to this Christmas meme.

Create a welcoming front entrance this Christmas

Its no secret. I love Christmas and I take a lot of pride in my Christmas tree. Unfortunately, my front porch was looking a little neglected less festive. For a couple of weeks I've been looking at this image on Pinterest

It looks so welcoming and makes me wonder how beautiful the inside of the house must be. The premise of the original post was to create trees by wrapping tomato cages with Christmas foliage and placing it inside a decorative pot. I was more interested in the overall appeal of this front entrance...simple, elegant and easy to achieve.

Here's my take. I gave up on the whole tomato cage idea when I found a faux pencil pine tree at the local Christmas Warehouse for a really reasonable price. I also splurged on a new wreath and doormat.  Obviously I couldn't get the whole effect because there isn't enough space, but I'm really happy with my front porch! The design is simple and tasteful, and just enough to invoke Christmas without overdoing it. I hope people walking by wonder if our house is as beautiful inside as well.

The tree is illuminated with red twinkle lights and poinsettias. At night, the lights glitters away; and during the day, the poinsettias add a little colour and interest.  My hubby repurposed a pot from the garden to stand the tree in. I think I'd like something a little taller, but this is perfect this year (even if you can see the bricks holding the tree up).

Isn't the doormat cute! Not sure I like the idea of wiping my feet on Santa's reindeer, but it certainly is whimsical and welcoming...and the kids love it!

Finally, my new wreath. Loads of green foliage with a sprinkling of red berries. I added a couple of poinsettias to the bottom so that it tied in with the Christmas tree.  The wreath also has lights in it, with a battery pack hidden behind it.

The total look was achieved for around $100.00. Considering we had our last wreath for 10 years, I see this as an investment for our future Christmases. I'm feeling the Christmas spirit every time I walk up to the front door.

Shopping list:

btw - This was my 701st post!! Gee I've had a lot to say over the years. lol. Thanks for sticking with me.

Meal Plan | Let's get cooking...

Its been a while since I've written out our meal plan for the week, and with the craziness of Christmas looming ever closer, every little bit of organisation helps!  On the weekend, hubby's Great Aunty dropped off a dozen eggs. Her chickens have been laying overtime and we're reaping the benefits...awesome. Nothing beats fresh, organic eggs.  Andrew has also been cultivating quite a delicious looking fruit and vege patch and some produce is now ready for harvesting! Happy days. So this weeks menu incorporates eggs and fresh homegrown veg.

Monday
Two-cheese and Tomato Pie (using 3 of Aunty's chicken eggs)
and steamed vegetables.

Tuesday
Chicken stirfry with noodles and bok choy and peas (from our patch)

Wednesday
Zucchini Slice (5 eggs)

Thursday
BBQ - Steak, jacket potatoes and salad

Friday
Andrew's homemade hamburgers with salad (lettuce from our patch)
The kids love these and have nicknamed them "Dad-Donalds". lol

Saturday
Macaroni Cheese (reduced fat recipe) and salad
(lettuce from our patch, and hopefully tomatoes)

Sunday
Roast pork and veges

Baking

That should satisfy everyone in the family this week! I've managed to include the kids' favourites (Eme = pasta; Seth = burgers), and use some of the eggs and produce. Hooray!

What will your family be eating this week?

Christmas | Free printable!

When I think of Christmas, I think of this quote from the movie "Elf".  One of my favourite things about Christmas is singing carols, and I'd like to think I've spread my fair share of Christmas cheer over the years. Why, just today, I was singing carols whilst the family and I decorated our tree.  In honour of Elf, and all things festive; I designed this printable to use in our home, and I thought I'd share it with you too!

For those of you not digging the forest green, why not try gold, berry red, magenta or turquoise...simply click on the image that suits your festive decor...opening it in a new screen, then save as. Images are designed to be printed 8"x10".

I'd love to hear from you if you decide to use it! Stay tuned tomorrow and I'll share with you how I incorporated this printable into our home this Christmas.

Ooh! That's Pinteresting | the Hansel and Gretel edition

I love gingerbread houses. Decorating them is such a fun family activity and they taste yummy too. It's been brought to my attention, by the small members of the family, that it's been a while since we made a gingerbread house at Christmas time.  I knew I took some photos of it at the time...and it appears its actually been three years!! Here's our gingerbread house from 2008! It was so delicious...we totally went Hansel and Gretel all over it! lol.

Well that just won't do. Looks like I'll be breaking out the gingerbread house mold to make another one this year. The last time we made one, we kept to white chocolate and jubes to decorate it...and I thought it looked pretty good...until I saw these amazing ones on Pinterest!

This one is just gorgeous...it never occurred to me to make a double storey gingerbread house! I love the rock candy pillars...
I love the piping work on this stunning gingerbread house, with its monochromatic scheme and light filled windows. I might try illuminating our gingerbread house this year...
This little house is so sweet with its pastel colours and whimsical feel. Love the woodgrain in the fondant door and door mat.

This modern take on a gingerbread house is fantastic! Love the gingerbread landscape and sugar work house and trees.

I'm not even sure how they made this one look like timber! Its so clever and makes me wish I lived somewhere cold with snow gently falling...

This one caught my eye instantly! The colours and so pretty and fresh, and the paint work on the front is just adorable.

The piece da resistance...an m&m covered house with rock candy bordering the steps! Thinking we might have to incorporate some of these ideas.

These gingerbread houses...and many more...can be found on my "festive stuff" pinterest board.  If you need an invitation to join Pinterest, send me an email and I'll invite you.
