Scrappy stuff...

It feels like forever since I shared some scrapbooking projects!  May has been an absolute write off and my mojo has flown the coop.  I have been blog surfing, filing away challenges and sketches, and reading tonnes of scrapbooking magazine back issues to refind some inspiration.  This month has been a shocker though...filled with illness that has left me absolutely no physical or mental energy.   Not only that, my pc died and I can't print any new photos! I can see my scrap bag sitting there mocking me...calling me...wanting me to come and play. Unfortunately a hot cup of black tea and a blankie are a much better option when you're sick with the flu from hell.

In the meantime, I thought I'd share a layout and card I created for Scrapbooking Memories ages ago. Thankfully the images were sitting in blogger in draft so that I could access them!  These projects were created for a Dream Street showcase challenge.  I still like this range. The colours are gorgeous and the little owls are adorable.  This photo was taken on Seth's first day of school...four years ago! I can't believe how quickly time has gone by! Seems like only yesterday...
...a little card ready to send to a friend...

Did you know Inspired Blueprints releases sketches four times a month? Here are the sketches for May 2011.  I haven't played with these ones yet and I can't wait to be able to print some photos and have a go.

The IB design team have been rockin' the sketches though. Check out their work here on the blog or in the gallery.

How do you motivate yourself to scrap when your mojo is all but gone?

Review and Giveaway | Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure

***ENTRIES HAVE NOW CLOSED***
This weekend Eme and I had the pleasure of watching "Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure" together.  I love that Eme is a girlie girl and loves watching musicals with her mumma! I absolutely love that I now have an official excuse to watch them myself. "Oh yes, we're taking "the kids" to see the movie"...hahaha. I do love a good Disney teen flick...

You might remember Sharpay Evans from High School Musical as the queen of East High's theatre department. In this newest movie from the Disney Channel, Ashley Tisdale reprises her role as Sharpay.  Its now one year after graduation and Sharpay is stepping out on her own in search of fame and fortune on Broadway. Sharpay is still sassy, spoiled and super stylish, with incredibly high expectations...a penthouse with a view and a leading role in a new musical.

Well, she's in for a rude shock...nothing goes to plan, and if you thought Sharpay was bitchy and demanding, wait until you meet Amber Lee Adams!  Amber Lee is a great Disney "villain"...the backstabbing and manipulative movie star who'll stop at nothing to ensure she has top billing.  Sharpay offers to become her assistant and ends up running ridiculous errands and cleaning toilets. Yes, Sharpay cleans a toilet, getting the toilet brush stuck in her hair!! ewwwww, lol.

What's a Disney movie without a love interest?  In this flick, we get two!! Sharpay meets the super cute (in Eme's opinion...and let me remind you, she's only 5...help me!) Peyton played by Austin Butler, who's character is a budding film maker.  Towards the end of the movie, Eme started to get really shy, burying her head in my shoulder.  "They're going to kiss" she tells me all embarrassed. "No they're not sweetie, this is a Disney movie, so no kissing", I reassured her. I was wrong. There's a minor pash at the end.  Good for Sharpay, I say! About time her character found a little love.

The other love story is between "Boi" (Sharpay's pampered pooch) and "Duchess" (Boi's doggy acting rival). Two cuter pups you will never find. I was predicting puppies at the end, but I wrong on that account too. lol. Thank goodness. Not ready to explain the whole puppy making process yet.

Eme and I really enjoyed watching this movie together. The songs are so catchy, Eme was singing along to them all by the end.  I must say, the fashions and Sharpay's apartment were super fun too...think of a cross between Barbie and Legally Blonde, then add more pink and sparkle. If you loved High School Musical, you won't be disappointed by this next installment.  Check out the preview...

Disney's "Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure" will be released at the end of June 2011.  Can't wait that long?  Well, good news! Thanks to the good people at the Disney Channel and Porter Novelli, I have a copy to giveaway to one lucky blog reader!

Mum stuff | Toilet training

Urgh. I hate toilet training toddlers...and yes, at five year's old, my daughter is technically still classed as a toddler (who knew...lol).  We're on the last leg of the toilet training saga and it can't come soon enough.  Thank goodness I've only had to go through this with two children!

Seth was so easy...once he made up his mind that he could do it.  At 2yrs 11mths, he steadfastly refused to sit on the potty. Wouldn't even try.  I was feeling very pressured from everyone around me because all of their children had been "toilet training" for months. I felt like a complete failure as a mother. I tried reassuring myself that there are very few adults in nappies, so there was hope for him.

One day, I snapped. I yelled at him to take off the nappy and sit on the toilet (where's my mother of the year award?).  He cried. I cried. I told him he was a big boy and it was time.  He reluctantly agreed and sat on the toilet. That day we had seven accidents. Thankfully I have timber floors that are easily mopped up.  The next day we had no accidents. That was it. He was day time toilet trained. All that angst and worry I'd been experiencing for nearly a year was over.  On a side note...those parents that were "toilet training" their children for nearly a year were still dealing with one's and two's everywhere but in the loo.  The lesson I learnt from this experience was invaluable. You can lead a child to the potty, but you can't make them pee.

Right. Now that we'd committed to wearing underpants, the nappies went all together. That day, I bought some Toy Story pull-ups for Seth and convinced him they were night time undies. He felt pretty special having Buzz Lightyear on the front.  After just two weeks, he told me that his pull-ups were too big. I was confused for a second, then realised he meant bulky. He just didn't like wearing them, so he went straight into undies. I can count on one hand the number of times he's wet the bed in the last five years. That's impressive.

Eme is a completely different kettle of fish.  She wanted to toilet train at only 2.5 years. She wanted to go straight onto the big toilet like everyone else.  We had a little step there at the loo...you know the kind with the handles and the seat so that the toilet hole wasn't so big. She would climb up and down there all day, and we'd give her loads of praise. Eme toilet trained during the day really quickly.

Fast forward to today. Eme still isn't night time trained. I haven't forced the issue, but I am starting to get really worried.  The problem is, she is such a deep sleeper, she just doesn't wake up.  Eme was put into pull-ups at the same time as toilet training as well, and we have had a few spells of dry nights. We were so close last year and then she had to be admitted to hospital with asthma. It set her back big time.  For the last week, her pull-ups have been dry. We decided to not buy another pack when they ran out two days ago.

Before I went to bed on the first night, I picked her up while she was asleep and put her on the toilet, and she went.  In the morning, she woke up to a wet bed. Who knows how long she'd been sleeping in it.  The bed was stripped. Sheets were washed. Let's try again.  Last night before we went to bed, Andrew put her on the loo while she was asleep, and she went. Being the fretful mum, I took her to the loo again about an hour later, and once again she went.  This morning, her bed was dry. Hooray!

Now, I'm not fooled for a second that she is finally getting it. She has no recollection of us taking her to the toilet at all.  Which leads me to these questions that I might have to ask a professional about.  I am concerned that she's not waking up, and I'm worried that she's not emptying her bladder properly during the day.  I'll give it a little more time and will reassess.

Any advice you can give me in your toilet training experience would be greatly appreciated...before I tear my hair out!

Tuesday | Ten

In celebration of Oprah's last three episodes to be aired on Channel Ten from tomorrow night, today's category is:

Top ten most memorable Oprah moments over the last 25 years!

Obviously there are way more, but this is Tuesday Ten, not Tuesday Ten Thousand...
  1. It doesn't matter how famous or wealthy you are, you can still put all the weight back on that you've lost. Oprah's never give up attitude towards her weight issues is admirable.  Most recently she interviewed Geneen Roth, the author of "Women Food and God".  The book was recommended to me by a kindred spirit, then the following day I caught the Oprah interview. I went and purchased the book straight away. Never diet again. Deal with what I'm feeding. Wish me luck.
  2. Eating dinner is good; dining is better.  Years ago I watched an episode featuring Carolyn Roehm. Her book "At Home with Carolyn Roehm" was truly inspiring. Her place settings, floral arrangements and seasonal menus were so incredibly beautiful. I wanted to host parties just like her, and I especially wanted her hallway cupboards filled with colourful coordinating crockery, glassware and linen for every occasion! I'm yet to obtain a copy of book, but I can picture it vividly in my mind.
  3. We are going to Australia! We are going to Australia!!  I never did get to sit in an Oprah audience and I was supremely jealous of every single one of those Aussies who watched the taping on the steps of the "Oprah" house.  The way Oprah portrayed Australia was just beautiful and she had me in tears for a week straight.  It made me want to go and see more of this beautiful country.  btw - I laughed my a#*e off when she was holding a koala!
  4. I have never felt more uncomfortable watching an episode of Oprah than when she recently interviewed men who were convicted child molesters.  The way they spoke about grooming their victims and how they knew exactly what they were doing left my skin crawling. They showed little or no remorse for molesting their children. So absolutely horrifying and I will never understand it.
  5. Oprah's generosity.  Every single "My Favourite Things" episode. I cried every single time. I was so excited for all of those people receiving all of those wonderful things!! That would have been my dream taping to attend. Looks like I'll have to live vicariously.
  6. Oprah's mobile phone campaign "No Phone Zone".  It is so easy to be distracted while driving. I will admit that I have been guilty of talking on my mobile phone while driving, but I always use hands free. I NEVER text while driving. There is no way you can control a vehicle going at 100km/hr and figure out whether you're pressing the right buttons to make a logical word. I often see young drivers texting, particularly females.  If its that frickin' important...pull over! So many accidents and deaths could be avoided by putting the mobile phone down. I've signed the pledge. Have you?
  7. Does this clutter make my butt look fat? lol. Loved the title of this book by Peter Walsh. It resonated with me. If your kitchen is a mess, you are more likely to make bad food choices. Its true. If my kitchen benches are heaving with crap, I will probably take the easy option and buy takeaway. When my bench is clean, I want to cook good food for my family. The kitchen is the heart and soul of the home.  The clutter in our houses and the clutter inside our minds and bodies is directly related.
  8. Oprah and Nate Berkus. I loved watching Nate Berkus' makeovers on the Oprah show and I'm so glad that he now has his own show. Yes, I watch it every afternoon at 5pm on W (Austar/Foxtel). He is such a caring and inspirational interior designer, and I love that he doesn't hide tv's behind armoires. lol. My heart broke for Nate when his partner was killed in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. I watched in tears as he spoke to Oprah following that devastating event. I'm so glad he had the courage to continue with his life in the media spotlight. The world is richer for having Nate in it.
  9. Jumping up and down on a couch to declare your love is just odd. I'm looking at you Tom Cruise. It was at that precise moment that I lost all interest in anything Tom Cruise has done or will ever do in the future. I'm not losing sleep over it.
  10. Lastly, the most important lesson I have learned from Oprah...live my best life possible. I cannot tell you how many times I've said to Andrew..."Today on Oprah..." and then shared some snippet that meant something to me. More often than not Oprah has made me cry...through shared happiness, absolute joy, and terrible sadness.  I have learned so much from her. After watching Oprah for 25 years...yes, even at the age of 12...she has become a massive part of my life and no doubt there will be a grieving process. Thank goodness for reruns.

Oprah, you are a beautiful person inside and out and I can't believe this is it! Thank you for an amazing 25 years.

Do you have a favourite Oprah moment?

Discover | redecorating

I've been bugging hubby for ages to repaint to lounge room. We last painted it sometime between the births of Seth and Eme, so probably 6ish years ago. It was well and truly overdue! There were marks and dings all over those walls thanks to two little children who like to ride scooters through the house, and play with markers. lol. Its a big job to repaint an open plan house. You can't just do the lounge room, because its attached to two hallways, a dining space and kitchen.

The catalyst though was last month. The ceiling leaked. Big time.  We poked a pencil through the gyp rock to let the water out and managed to fill two 9L pots!  Thankfully my Dad is incredibly handy and came down to help Andrew fix the damage.  Now, obviously that meant we had to paint the ceiling...may as well do the walls at the same time!
The photo above shows the new colour... Dulux's "Antarctica White" quarter strength.  The walls were already a pale blue, but I wanted a really pale duck egg blue...a grey/green blue if you will...shut up, I know what I mean! lol.  Andrew spent three days painting last week and voila!  So happy!

My next trick was to put up some wall art.  I fell in love with some chocolate brown vinyl wall art from EAD Designs last year and have been waiting to put it up once we repainted (yes, its taken that long).  Its a pretty bold piece measuring 9'x5' and its the first thing you see when you walk through the hallway. I think its going to take a little getting used to, but I love it!  It was really easy to apply too. It comes in separate pieces so that you can create your own forest look.  The little birdies are so sweet.  btw - Don't you love my new floor accessory? The yellow floor towel is a must in every home...ok, maybe not...maybe I need to teach the kids to hang up their towels before I take a photo! lol.
To dress it up, I rehung our paintings and added another birdy on top of one of them.   A rusted "W" hung from the tree was the final piece to the puzzle. I don't think I can fit anything else on that wall. hehe.  With everything back in place, its time to start hanging out in the lounge room again.  I was watching Eme and Andrew the other night lying together on the lounge, and it was so sweet, I had to take a picture. Eme was busy telling Andrew that her Barbie had party hair...he was acting interested. Ahhh, such is the life of a dad to a little girl.
What colour is your living space? I'm always interested to know why people pick the colours they do.  For me, its blue all the way. Its so calming. Must be the Pisces in me...

ps. Excuse the crappy photos...I got excited and had to share! lol.

Mum stuff | On my mind...

The tissue paper flowers pictured here were made by Seth and given to me on Mother's Day. I love them. They're so bright and colourful, and he put all his effort into making them perfect for me. I am a lucky mum...

--------------------------------------------

I have written this post four times now. Sometimes its so hard to communicate how you really feel about something without offending or upsetting someone (whether they read this blog or not). Lately I have been thinking alot about love and loss.  The love for my children is beyond measure. They know it, I know it and the whole bloggy world knows it because I mention it often enough.  I will never understand then why a parent would take the life of a child.

Seth has been asking me about Kiesha Abrahams. I didn't realise that he even knew who she was...its amazing what they pick up from the media.  He wanted to know what happened to her. How do I explain to him that the two people a child is meant to trust most in this world, have taken her life away, buried her body in the bushland like an old dog, lied about it, then sought sympathy from the media and the public?  I told him the truth.

He asked me if they threw her off a bridge. No sweetie, that was poor little Darcey Freeman.  Last night he asked me what abducted means.  Now, Kyla Rogers has become another statistic at the hands of a parent. Will people remember these children? I sure as hell will.  Three little angels that were betrayed by their parents.

At what point do you go from being cranky at your child, to absolutely beating them until they take their last breath? I will NEVER understand it. How can a child annoy you so badly that you go to that extreme? How can you hate your ex-partner so much that you'll "punish" them by taking away the life of a child? It absolutely brings me to tears and breaks my heart.  Being a parent is a privilege.

----------------------------------------------

Some mum's are not so lucky...

Heartbreak touched us personally recently with the unexpected passing of a family member two days before Mother's Day. K was a young and vibrant woman with two young children, and she will be deeply missed.  Nothing can ever replace a mother's love and I have constantly thought about her children since that day.  I look at those tissue paper flowers and think of the gifts that K's children had made for her for this Mother's Day. They never got to see the joy in her eyes when they presented them to her.

Yesterday, I watched my children walk down the hill from the bus stop.  Eme was happily skipping along, while Seth carried her school bag for her.  I started to get teary for everything that K and her children will miss out on. Simple moments. Quiet moments. The not so quiet moments.  Her passing has very much put life into perspective for me.

Hug your children, and keep them safe. They need you.

Discover | Decluttering and delegating

Welcome to crazy town...otherwise known as our children's playroom. Like most kids, Seth and Eme absolutely love making a mess, but loathe cleaning it up. Left to their own devices, they would happily live in chaotic filth.  Andrew and I can't stand it, and this is most definitely NOT what the rest of the house looks like.  This week, I'd had enough of shutting the door and hoping that the cleaning fairies would do their best.  Tears and cries of "we can't do it!" screamed out, and threats were made of "we're cancelling your birthday party if you don't get in there and make a difference". Did that motivate them? Not in the slightest.
Yesterday, Andrew was working in the backyard, and I thought I'd attempt the playroom. Both kids volunteered to help Andrew. Typical. After 1/2 hour they were both back inside. I think they must have gotten underneath Andrew's feet and he sent them in. lol. Didn't bother me...I now had two captive helpers! Yippee!!!  Here's the end result.  You couldn't tell in the above photo, but there is actually a big rug on the floor! lol.
We threw out three bags of toys...old colouring in books, puzzles with missing pieces, those dreadful toys that come with happy meals, toys that were broken, and ones that they'd simply grown out of but weren't in any condition to donate or giveaway.  It feels SOOOOO good looking in that door now.  In one corner is a small tv with all of the kids dvds, and a small book case.  On the opposite wall is another small book case, Disney Princess kitchen (Eme's not Seth's, lol), and my favourite, an IKEA Trofast storage system. Those little white tubs hold a multitude!! The kids have three drawers each. Seth's are broken down into things that move, action figures and lego/marbles/mighty beans.  Eme has the more girlie sorting of Barbie stuff, kitchen play stuff and little characters like zhu zhu pets.
On the return wall are Eme's dollhouses...yes, plural.  The little one is her Fisher Price "My First Dollhouse", which she was given for her second birthday. She still plays with it, so I'm not ready to give that one away just yet.  The larger one was a hand-me-down from a neighbour and contains all of her barbies.  The barbies live in multilevel luxury decorated in doilies that Eme has stolen from my scrapbook stash, and other random bits of fabric she's encountered. I plan on refurbishing the dollhouse with pretty scrapbook papers or wallpaper off cuts.  I love how she's decorated it. Definitely fun and her random style.  Look at her sitting there with her legs crossed in the next pic. Is she five or fifteen??
After much persuasion, I managed to help the kids clean the room, not the other way around.  I gave each of them a task and we made loads of smaller piles before we put things away.  I involved them in the discarding of toys so that it was their decision to get rid of them.  They were very proud of the end result and couldn't wait to show Andrew.  After helping me all afternoon, the kids deserved a reward.  They threw themselves down on the beanbags (an essential in a kids play space) and watched Shrek 3D...which they could actually watch in 3D because we found the special glasses in that big pile of crap! lol.

Please tell me I'm not alone and your kids play spaces end up looking like the local tip occasionally...

Hopefully it will stay this way until Seth's birthday party this weekend. I may just have to put a lock on the door and ban them.

Cheers, Lis.

Review & Giveaway | Lemonade Mouth on dvd!

I'll admit...I'm a sucker for Disney movies and the Disney channel...so when the opportunity came along to review one of their brand new movies, I jumped at the chance!!

Introducing "Lemonade Mouth"...the all-new Disney channel original movie!  If you loved High School Musical and Camp Rock, then Lemonade Mouth is right up your alley.

Lemonade Mouth is the story of five high school students who meet by chance in detention. Their bond is instant and together they discover their shared love of music, friendship and standing up for what they believe in.

Faced with opposition from their school principal, high school bullies, a competing band and family issues, these five plucky teenagers pull it together to become a band that everyone loves! There's a little romance thrown in, but true to Disney style, there is no kissing or swearing (love that in a kids movie).

Our verdict...we didn't like this movie...we LOVED it!!  I know that this movie will be making it into our regular play list.  Not only are the characters believable, and the storyline engaging; the music is really good! I think the Disney Channel have hit a home run with this one. The cast is incredibly talented and the music is so sophisticated...I would happily listen to it in the car or on my ipod. The kids are already asking me for a copy of the soundtrack!! (mental note: source soundtrack). I'll admit, I cried at the end...call me a sooky-lala if you will.  Laughed out loud too at how they came up with their band name! You'll have to watch it to find out.

Seth and Eme loved it too!  Seth (7.5) thought the music was great and the band were pretty cool. He was particularly impressed by the dancing at the end. Eme (5) was totally enthralled from beginning to end...and now has a crush on "Charlie" the drummer (played by newcomer Blake Michael)...too cute.  Eme also told me that the principal (played by Christopher McDonald) was mean and nothing like her school principal (glad to hear it!).  So, big thumbs up from the Warren family.

Check out the trailer for yourself!

...and guess what?!! I have a copy to giveaway to one of my lucky blog readers!!

Scrapware | Shadow box and giveaway!

This month at the Storyboard Kits crop night, the girls wanted to create an off the page item for Mother's Day...and here's what I came up with.  I mentioned to Ange at Scrapware that I wanted to create a shadow box where the inside opening was 4x4"...perfect for a standard sized photo, with a bit trimmed off the sides.  Ange, being the awesome chipboard designer and cutter she is, resized the mini bracket shadow box that is currently available for sale (KT62), and sent them up to me! Love that woman.

The front of the shadow box measures 7"x7" from tip to tip.  The kit that I put together for the night included the Scrapware bracket shadow box, Scrapware mini foliage and eight 6"x6" papers from Crate Paper.  I only gave the girls instructions on how to construct the box, and the design on top was purely up to them.  As you can see, I've kept the front quite clean in design to let the patterns from Crate Paper's "Portrait" collection shine. The colours are gorgeous and I love the nanna prints...lovely roses and damasks...a bit like old wallpaper.
The Scrapware mini foliage has been spritzed in Mr Huey's "Lunch Tray" mist, and each of the leaves has been bent to add dimension.  A clustering of rolled roses on top finishes off the shadow box. Seriously, how fun are rolled roses to create?! I could add them to every project.

Now for the giveaway part...

Want to create a shadow box for yourself?  I have one pack left that I'm willing to share with one lucky blog reader.  The winner will receive:

  • Scrapware bracket shadow box kit
  • Scrapware mini foliage sheet
  • Eight sheets of Crate Paper "Portrait" collection 6"x6" papers
  • Step by step instructions
To enter, simply leave a comment on this post describing the photo you most want to showcase in a shadow box!  Want to increase your chances?  For another entry, help me spread the word about this giveaway by either blogging, tweeting etc, then leave me a link in a separate comment.

Entries close midnight, Sunday 15 May 2011.

Good luck! Lis.

Discover | The Blogger's Manifesto

I have been blogging for over four years now and I think I've seen it all. The online bitchiness and "smacking" by anonymous bloggers, the stealing of work, be it images and/or text, and the failure to credit work back to the originator. Even recently, a scrapbooker attended a class taught by me, then entered the layout in a local show and won first prize!! No credit was given to me whatsoever, and the work was copied step by step from an original layout created by me...exact product, exact placement, everything.  It was outright theft of work and I was incredibly peeved to say the least that she had been rewarded for "her" creative effort.  I distinctly remember teaching this woman because I had to readjust her photos as she had stuck them on upside down!  A worthy winner? I think not.

More recently I have been moving into the promotional/advertising side of blogging, and I fully intend to disclose when and where I have received remuneration in the form of products, services or money. Why? Because its fair and ethical.

Enter...the Blogger's Manifesto!  This manifesto has made me incredibly happy. I love the core values listed in the Blogger's Manifesto, and I love that its written in plain language that we can all understand...no legal mumbo jumbo.

"The Blogger’s Manifesto outlines the core values to implement for Best Blogging Practices.
By following and applying these values in your own blog, you are helping us build a nation of bloggers committed to being the best and most honourable bloggers that they can be."

The Blogger's Manifesto is the initiative of Digital Parents Australia. Full credit is given to Brenda, Liz G, Claire, Tina G, and Liss K for their fantastic effort in putting this document together...and more importantly, for caring enough to draft it in the first place. Thank you!

So, what can you do?  Are you committed to being the best blogger you can be?  Show your support and commitment by signing the Honour Roll, and grabbing a badge to proudly display on your own blog.

Scrapbook Creations | Issue #85

Scrapbook Creations Issue #86 is about to hit the shelves, so I thought its time I shared these layouts that were published in Issue #85. These layouts, plus this one which was featured on the cover (thank you!), were part of an article I wrote called "Scrapping in the moment - how to stay inspired". I hope I inspired somebody out there... anyone... Bueller... Bueller... (is this thing on?)

In the article, I tried to show how to scrap using the memories that your photos conjure up, and to get out of the scrapping chronologically rut. I started my journey with this layout...love these pics of Seth. They weren't taken at a special occasion, but they remind me how fun my son is and how quickly he's growing up!! He indulges his mum with the obligatory "nice smile" photo...as long as I let him ham it up a bit first. lol.

This one was next.  The photos above reminded me that even though he can be a ratbag sometimes, he's still an incredibly caring little boy.  Here Seth is, meeting his cousin Cameron for the first time.  Seth couldn't wait to give Cameron a cuddle and you can see in his face how thrilled he was.  btw, Cameron was 9 months old yesterday! I can't believe how quickly he's growing...he'll be one before we know it.

The pictures above reminded me how different a story it was when he met his sister! Despite telling me for months that he was having a sister (we hadn't found out...and he was right), he didn't want a bar of her in the hospital. We pulled the crib over to him and he peered over the top...what is that! He wasn't impressed at all...until "she" gave him a Buzz Lightyear to say thank you for being her new brother.

Now that Scrapbook Creations has gone bi-monthly, I'm having withdrawals. Mind you, I have read #85 from cover to cover several times over and definitely gotten my creative monies worth.  I can't wait to read Issue #86 and get all inspired!

Tonight I'm hosting the monthly Storyboard Kits midnight class and crop, and I can't wait to get scrapping with the girls. On the menu tonight is a new Scrapware shadow box with a Mother's Day theme, and some layouts using this month's kit, Kelsey.  Will you be doing something crafty this weekend?

Cheers, Lis.

Discover | Ten years

Today, Andrew and I have been married for ten years.  Ten years of so much joy, ups and downs, trials and triumphs. Its been such a ride, and I'm in love with this man as much today as the day we became husband and wife...possibly more!  Actually, yes...so much more!  Over the years we've learnt so much about each other and we're so in sync.

Andrew and I met in 1994 while working together. Back in the day, our place of work was very sociable...in fact, quite a number of coworkers met and married. lol.  It took two years for us to both work up the courage to profess that we liked each other...courage in liquid form at my housewarming party. hehe.  From that day onwards, we've been together. We never really went on "dates" as such. We'd been friends for so long, that we already knew about each other...we just went straight onto the "being in love" phase.  I still remember how I felt that first week. You couldn't get the smile off my face. We'd meet for lunch in the Royal Botanical Gardens each day, and I'd be feeling so sick with excitement, I could only eat half a sandwich!  I would have married Andrew straight away if he asked me...I just knew this is the man I want to spend the rest of my life with.

Fast forward five years, and we were married.  Fast forward another ten years and we've been through so much together!  We've built a house, been blessed with two beautiful and healthy children, survived two redundancies and lots of filler in between.  As I said back in my wedding story post, we had always planned for a marriage, not a wedding, and despite what we've faced, we've stuck together. We're a team and we're in it for the long haul. I can't wait to be that old couple celebrating their golden anniversary!

Andrew is my rock, my everything.  He works so hard for us, and gives me so much love.  I am who I am today because of him. He gives me the freedom to pursue my dreams, and supports me no matter how hair-brained they might be.  I could quite possibly be the luckiest girl on the face of the Earth.

Love you babe. Happy Anniversary! Lis.

Storyboard Kits | Kelsey

Attention all scrapbookers!!
This month's kit "Kelsey" has hit the Storyboard store!

Featuring bright and beautiful primary colours, this kit is just perfect for that boy in your life...or girl...its so versatile! There is a mix of patterned papers from Crate Paper, Basic Grey, My Mind's Eye, Pink Paislee and Bo Bunny. Neutral cardstocks and a diecut by Jenni Bowlin complete the mix.

A sprinkling of game pieces by Tim Holtz, deep blue brads, buttons and clips are perfect for adding that little something extra to your layouts.  Diecut polkadot denim cogs are a fun addition and give you more dimension on your layouts without adding the bulk.

In this month's kit, you'll also receive FULL packets of Basic Grey pinwheels, Bo Bunny wraps (3 yards of trim!), and Crate Paper phrase stickers. Also included are Jenni Bowlin star banner stickers in either yellow, red or green...each on coordinates beautifully (yellow shown in kit image).

Head on over to the Storyboard store to purchase your kit today! Stocks are VERY limited, so act quickly...especially if you're always looking for products to scrap boy layouts!

I'll be playing with my kit over the next couple of days and I can't wait to share my layouts with you!
Cheers, Lis.

Discover | Getting my "stuff" together

"What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us."
- Oliver Wendell Holmes

So, why this post? For a long time I've been complaining that I don't have enough time or I'm too busy...I think I've run out of excuses. Its time to get my shit together (GMST)...find balance, stop sweating the small stuff and work towards goals that will make our lives so much simpler. I am so guilty of being lazy when I have too much time on my hands, and then running around crazy when I have a deadline. In the world of Covey, I’m spending way too much time in quadrant 1 (important and urgent) and quadrant 4 (not important and not urgent)…time to shift the priorities, and its all about planning. (Yeah, I'm a time management nutter and like to read about it, but not actually act on it...see point 5 below.) Some things are beyond my control...but I can be responsible for the things within my control.

I wear a tonne of hats in my daily life, the most important being wife and mother. In addition, I work full time (almost…6 hrs per day), I run a small business from home, and hold a few positions on scrapbooking design team. In between this, there's time with hubby and kids, after school activities, house stuff, and trying to find some “me” time for the things I like to do. Usually, the busier you are, the more time you can make or find. I have days where I sit on the lounge and watch tv…love that down time. I have other days where I’m incredibly busy and exhausted by the time I flop into bed.

So, what can I do to help me meet the objectives of GMST?
  1. Learn to say NO
    • I have to remind myself that its is okay to say no. I just have to trust my instincts when I'm asked to do something and have the confidence to decline.  I really don't need to take on more than I am capable of doing and cause myself even more angst.
  2. Figure out how I am wasting my time
    • Not that hard...its pretty bloody obvious.  If my washing needs folding, and I'm watching tv, why not combine the two activities. Simple.
    • Limit the amount of time I am "connected". We all suffer from FOMO (fear of missing out)occasionally...sometimes I should just suffer from AMO (actually missing out) and move on. lol. The world of facebook, twitter, forums and blogs will still be there tomorrow.
  3. Plan the time I do have available effectively
    • Diarise it, timetable it, make appointments with myself to get.it.done...allow for down time.
    • Don't make it so rigid that I can't deviate from the routine.
  4. Put my transition time to better use
    • Waiting for the kids while they're having 1/2 hr swimming lessons...great time to check my emails or surf the web...otherwise I'm just sitting on my arse.
    • Instead of bitching that I have loads of washing to do...put a load on...it only takes 5 minutes to get that machine loaded and switched on. Better yet, put the timer on before work so that its done by the time I get home.
    • Talking at the kitchen bench? Wipe it down instead of standing there idle, or chop up some veges for future meals.
  5. Quit procrastinating
    • Try not to get overwhelmed by the big list of "things" that need to happen.
    • Remember how you eat an elephant...one bite at a time.
    • Break down those really big shitty jobs into smaller tasks and prioritise them. Don't want to declutter the whole kitchen...do one drawer or cupboard at a time.
  6. Deal with paperwork, emails and phone messages
    • Instead of opening, reading and putting it away to deal with later...just handle it once!
    • Don't pile that paperwork up on the bench. File it, pass it on, act on it or bin it.
  7. Use the time management tools that are available to me
  8. Delegate
    • Stop making excuses that they are just kids. They can help too...even if its just making them responsible for their things, setting the table, or matching socks.
Seems simple enough...let's see how I go. I'm seriously interested in any tips or links you want to share about time management in the home and life in general.

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference”
- Reinhold Niebuhr

Thanks for popping by.
Cheers, Lis.
